Maltese Ghana Jamboree

Maltese folk music, called ghana (pronounced "aahnah") from the islands of Malta and Gozo. Guitar based music, with topics ranging from historical sagas to recent happenings, love, social comedy, politics, relationships, etc., usually recorded live. "Fatti", "kanzunetti" and "makkjetti" are pre-composed songs. "Spirtu pront", sung in quattrains, is on the spot singing, sung between two or more singers who compose the words right there and then in response to each other's lyrics (very difficult, especially since the 2nd and 4th lines of the quattrains have to rhyme, the words have to build up the theme that the other singer singer started and you have to introduce something new to carry on the subject). "Prejjem" is instrumentals, traditionally with one guitar playing lead and two guitars playing rhytm, tunes one note lower than the lead guitar. Some contemporary folk music tracks use the accordian sound, besides modern base and drums, etc. Old Maltese instruments include the flute, open drum, bagpipes, spanish guitar and "zufzafa", a sort of drone instrument consisting of a reed passing through a membrane stretched over an open drum. The player wets his fingers and rubs the reed to produce a drone (sort of like the jug in a jug band). A lot of the tracks on this playlist are recorded from cassettes, and most of the music was recorded live in Malta, Canada, USA and Australia in various clubs; some are recorded from vinyl 45's and a few from CD's.
